could you describe your working methods for producing a 100% like for like image, grid and lines, pencil sketch, paint over trace or just free hand bro?

i don't use a grid and i don't paint over. I do trace a rough but acurate sketch of the original image though, I think this is the key.
i keep the original open in a seperate document on screen for reference. I use the eye dropper to select the basic colours from the original image, then i do a rough underpainting. Once that is done i zoom in really close and start painting in the detail on the face and work my way out. I like to leave alot of the rough underpainting around the edges.
It always looks absolutely rubbish at the beginning
